Thursday 19th July 2012 - Shenstone

I headed off down to Stanklyn Lane this morning to see if I could locate TMH's Whinchat from the previous day.  There was no sign, in fact there was very little to get excited about in this part of the patch full stop! The highlight being a single Large White butterfly, things were that poor!

So after spending a fruitless hour or so in the Stanklyn area I headed over to Butts Lane which was more productive thankfully.  On starting my walk here I was greeted by an adult ♀ Kestrel hawking nearby and 3 Common Buzzards up soaring.  On the scuffled field there were 7 Mistle Thrush present.  1 Yellowhammer, 8 Linnets and 13 Skylarks were also noted.

Butterfly wise the walk produced 1 Essex Skipper, 3 Meadow Brown, 8 Ringlet, 2 Small Tortoiseshell and 1 Large White.  Other insects of interest were a ♀ Roesel's Bush Cricket and a Black-striped Longhorn Beetle.

  1. You're still picking up a good variety of species, Jason. I've hit the doldrums - last time out I didn't see a thing.
    Great new header photo, btw.

  2. The beetle is quite impressive Jason, I don't think I've seen one of those.

Lovely Common Tern photos in the earlier post!

Good to see the Essex Skipper earlier too. I hadn't realised it had spread so far and wide, I must look more carefully now ;-)

    Love the new header photo!

  3. Just caught up with your recent posts Jason! Splendid reading! You are doing well on your patch with a good variety of birds and butterflies! Now the weather is warming up I hope to see a few more butterfly species as I have seen very few this summer. I did have a Comma in my garden on Friday so things are looking up!

The header photo is ace...well done!

  4. Rob - Thanks mate, much appreciated. Yes I think things have improved in these parts over the last week

Jan - Thankyou. I think essex Skipper are probably far more common than we think, its just they often get over looked due to their similarity to Small skipper.

Pam - Cheers very much. Things are definitley improving and hopefully the good weather will stay a while longer!
